Christopher Nibble - Review

Title: Christopher Nibble
Author: Charlotte Middleton
Publisher: Oxford University Press
Year: 2009
Found: Borrowed from library

What's It All About?!
Christopher, like all the other guinea pigs in Dandeville, looooooooooooooooves eating dandelions... In fact; Christopher loves them more than playing football! All the guinea pigs eat them for breakfast, lunch and tea, but soon all that munching means a decline in dandelion leaves... It also means that dandelions are soon off the menu and all that are left are chewy, cabbage leaves!

Christopher discovers what is probably the last dandelion in the whole world underneath his window and goes to the library to do some research. He resists the temptation to eat the dandelion and plants the seeds.... Soon, the guinea pigs are eating dandelions once more, and Christopher loves to grow them!
Review:
What I think is lovely about this story, is that it introduces a young audience to the importance of replacing and sustaining the environment.

It was put together very well, and was quite funny in places, it made me chuckle that the last dandelions could be bought over the Internet for quite a lot of money... (keeping up with the times, using technology that children recognise etc)

The pictures are bold and interesting; they held OJ's attention. I felt that the story had subtle layers that would appeal to the age range, for example; OJ is only two but he was grasping the idea of planting the seed to make more dandelions, as he gets older he will start to get the idea of why it is important to plant more seeds, and where our resources come from.

I would think that this book would do well being in a reception class topic box and used for spring/growing topics.

OJ:
Remembered that OJ and mummy blew dandelion seeds. Asked for this story to be re-read!

Ernest : Review

"Simply Gorgeous"... Daily Mail

Title: Ernest
Author: Catherine Rayner
Publisher: Macmillan Children's Books
Year: 2009
Found: Borrowed from library

What's It All About?!
This is Ernest. He is a moose. A very BIG moose and he can't seem to quite fit into the book. He is very disappointed. Then his small friend has a big idea..
Review:
When I first picked up this book, I was a little uncertain to start with. The image on the front cover didn't draw me in; but then again, we were in a rush at the library and OJ was having trouble choosing. I'm glad we did though, as OJ has asked for this story each night out of all the stories we choose together.
The story is simple, a quick read before bedtime. The character Ernest, is faced with a dilemma; he can't fit inside the book. His small friend (we don't learn their name, but it's a little chipmunk character) comes up with an idea, and together, they manage to fit Ernest inside.
The language is simple yet provides a child with lots of opportunity to extend their vocabulary. Lots of lovely descriptive words such as, squidge, shimmy and scrumple. The text is not set, it is in varied font (size/style) and this makes for very eye catching and interesting pages for the reader.
It's a lovely story that looks at friendship and the concepts big and small.
At the end of the story, the reader has to unfold a page at the back, which works brilliantly with the story.

OJ:
"What shall we read tonight OJ?"
"Ernesd!" (He still working on the 'T' sound on the end of words... bless him.)
